Ok\u00a0folks. I must admit that my newest favorite vice is\u00a0cuitlacoche: black fungus that grows on ears of corn prior to harvest.\u00a0Mmmmm. Last year it was\u00a0seasoned\u00a0grasshoppers in Oaxaca but them little grass\u00a0munchers\u00a0don\u2019t stand a chance against fungus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner was thin strips of chicken breast rolled up, stuffed with goat cheese and\u00a0cuitlacoche\u00a0in a squash flower sauce. Que\u00a0sabrosa!!!\u00a0 Don\u2019t knock it till you try it and if that doesn\u2019t work for you, get some bravery with a couple of shots of\u00a0Reserva\u00a0Anejo. Sharon had chicken in a heavy chocolate mole sauce with sesame seeds. Not too shabby either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ok, that was this evening\u2019s dinner but let\u2019s talk about the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today was a day of culture, or an attempt at culture. We took a lengthy subway ride to La\u00a0Casa\u00a0Azul,\u00a0Frida Khalo\u2019s\u00a0house and part time studio in the\u00a0Barrio\u00a0of\u00a0Coyuca. We thought. Once off the subway we managed to take an additional lengthy walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it us or\u2026 nah, it\u2019s us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the hill,\u00a0through\u00a0the woods and one huge graveyard, we found La\u00a0Casa Azul.\u00a0 Wonderful photos, original paintings and lush gardens. Unfortunately, no cameras allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there we wanted to see the houses that were\u00a0Frida\u00a0and Diego\u00a0Rivera\u2019s\u00a0home, Two\u00a0separate buildings connected by a third floor walkway. We decided to try and walk to them which was possibly 3 miles.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know that at first. Mid-way we found \u201cLa Pause\u201d; quaint little stop with a private, overgrown patio. Tequila,\u00a0cervesas\u00a0and tapas\u00a0de mozzarella,\u00a0tomate, pan y pesto. Perfecto! This little stop included fresh mulberries falling on us from the trees. So I guess we got snacks with our snacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we realized it was a really long walk we tried to hail a cab. Yeah, right.\u00a0 There is some sort of science that we are just not privy to when it comes to the Mexican cab hailing arts. It took us quite a while to catch a cab for the last 8 blocks. No need to tell you more about this fine art history\u2026 see the movie \u201cFrida\u201c. If anyone knows where our copy of the movie is, please return it, ok? The two houses are really cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hailed yet another cab\u2026 eventually, and got back to the nearest metro station and made it back to the hotel by about 5pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a short siesta a decided to find dinner. There is a little restaurant a couple of blocks from here that Sharon wanted to try. Upon getting ready to leave\u2026 total power outage. TV, lights, AC, everything\u2026 out. Hey, seems like a good time to leave and get dinner, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We exit the hotel amongst the sound of generators powering up and walk toward the restaurant. We notice something slightly abnormal, i.e. there is no power for many blocks. Many, many quickly darkening blocks.\u00a0 We hot foot it back to the hotel. As luck would have it, the generators we heard were the hotel\u2019s and their restaurant is pretty darn good. See paragraph two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll be back tomorrow evening so we\u2019ll tell you what happened then. Thanks for putting up with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
