This was written a bit tipsy by all parties concerned.\u00a0 But too good to edit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1 6\/28\/12
We arrived at the airport at one-ish for the flight to\u00a0Toluca, MX<\/a>.\u00a0 An uneventful flight except for the free scotch.\u00a0 Did you catch that?\u00a0 Free Dewars!\u00a0Southwest airlines ain\u2019t got nuthin\u2019 on Interjet.\u00a0 Upon landing,\u00a0 the storms started. Serious storms while we got searched and immigrated.\u00a0 Then we waited a good hour for the one-man rent-a-car to complete our transaction.\u00a0 The storms continued to rage as we left the airport and searched for our cheesy hotel.\u00a0 Thank goodness we found a Soriana (HEB equivalent) and loaded up on chips, beer and tequilla.\u00a0 This proved to be a life saver in the following days.\u00a0 We found the hotel and basically confined ourselves to the 40 square feet of bed and bathroom.\u00a0 Cheap flight toToluca does not include culture, good food, entertainment or anything worth writing about, so\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2. 6\/29\/12
Yum\u2026 continental breakfast.\u00a0 Sanka coffee and a banana.\u00a0 We fled Toluca for Puebla, eventually.\u00a0 In classic Sharon and Donnie style, we drove in the correct direction but not necessarily to the right town.\u00a0 An hour or so later we ended up in\u00a0Chalma<\/a>.\u00a0 We intended to go there but not for a couple of days.\u00a0 Go ahead, get a Mexico map.\u00a0 Looks simple doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Walk in our shoes and you\u2019d end up in Chalma. Chalma and the surrounding area is beautiful, magical and a welcome sight for lost eyes.\u00a0 Actually, we first got to Aquaquate, the village with a welcoming spring of fresh water from the base of a huge cypress tree.\u00a0 \u201cBelievers\u201dgo to this sacred water, then have a pilgrimage up and down the hills toChalma.\u00a0 The pilgrimage ends at the Cathedral where the \u201cBlack Christ\u201d was built by Spaniards in the 16th century.\u00a0 There are a few other \u201cSaints\u201dinvolved but we don\u2019t need to go there right now.\u00a0 We also purchased a 2 liter Coke bottle of\u00a0pulque<\/a>\u00a0and had a great lunch of\u00a0 pork and rice in salsa verde.\u00a0 After a few hours we left for Puebla, again.\u00a0 It was a meer 10 minutes till we got lost again, somewhere in a national park, (a park wasn\u2019t in our travel plans).\u00a0 Nice drive though.\u00a0 \u201cMagically\u201d the road dumped us into the ritzy part of Cuernavaca. Not that we were trying to go there but\u2026\u00a0 one lost road leads to another which led to Tepoztl\u00e1n.\u00a0 Nice town embraced by mountains and the eventual road toPuebla.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t realize we would drive by the base of the volcano \u201cEl Popo\u201d.\u00a0 A nice surprise indeed and a good photo op.\u00a0 We arrived inPuebla a little late for our taste and near 9 o\u2019clock, found ourselves in a hyper-bustling\u00a0 downtown.\u00a0 Tired and road weary, we found a \u201cLaQuinta\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019ll do.\u00a0 Hot water.\u00a0 Good bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3. 6\/30\/12
Upon waking we looked for our free breakfast. We were again lost, this time in our hotel. To get to the restaurant we had to go down two floors catch another elevator, go up three floors, across the indoor 7th floor swimming pool, yell\u201cMarco\u201d then be seated by our waiter \u201cPolo\u201d. Breakfast was great-ish. SinceDonnie went on strike as a driver, we took a cab to downtown central in search of \u201cEl Nino Ciego\u201d, (blind baby Jesus). We found it. Pretty eerie. We proceeded to visit a dozen or so cathedrals, each more magnificent than the previous, and with their own \u201cI\u2019ll out do your Jesus\u201d attitude. We saw blind Jesus, crawlingJesus, eyes rolled in back of head Jesus, \u201cI gotta take this call on my cell\u201dJesus and black, \u201ccommin\u2019 to get-cha\u201d Jesus. Jesus H. Christ! Enough Jesus\u2019s. We prayed for a cab. It took us off to a circus that just happened to be across from the hotel. Lions, Tigers and Burros! Oh, my!\u00a0 It was a good day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 4. 7\/1\/12
We got out of Puebla fairly early and headed toward Chalula.\u00a0 You may be impressed that we didn\u2019t get lost.\u00a0 This is the oldest town in the Americas, founded somewhere around 500 AD-ish.\u00a0 Nice town with beautiful cathedrals.\u00a0 We would have liked to have gone there originally had we of known.\u00a0 Low key.\u00a0 Nice folks.\u00a0 All around calm and cool.\u00a0Around noon we headed back towards Cuernavaca and into the twilight zone of D&S travel. We managed to turn a one hour drive into a 4 hour extravaganza of \u201cdo we turn here\u201d?\u00a0 Eventually, Cuernavaca was on the horizon and we found a lovely hacienda-turned-hotel near the Zocalo. We have learned that \u201ca good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.\u201d\u00a0Cuernavaca brought us good food, political excitement, (it\u2019s election day) and a decent buzz.\u00a0 Good thing we stocked up on day one.\u00a0 They don\u2019t sell alcohol on election day OR the day before. Maybe the new El Presidente will change that.<\/p>\n
