Hey amigos y amigas,  Donnie & Sharon here from way south Mexico. To be accurate we are in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. (get a map)

We landed yesterday in Tuxla Gutierrez and stayed the night. Not there though. That city was “rush-rush” and we weren’t in the mood, especially after looking for the reserved hotel room that was never-to-be-found. Between Tuxla and the airport was a cute little town,Chiapas del Corzo. It is surrounded by a couple of huge rivers. We stayed a block off the square which gave easy access to our personal walking tour. The square was quite large with massive Ceiba trees and an unusual gazebo of old red brick that was as massive as the ceiba trees. Dinner was al pastor con pina y queso. We’ll be back here for our last evening because of its proximity to the airport.

We got out of town fairly early after a lame breakfast and took the free road to San Cristobal. “Free road”? Put it this way, toll road is straight and fast; probably a 20 minute drive. Free road is an hour and a half of beautiful; drive up the mountains, into the clouds and see the indians in all their splendor. Small packs of ladies carrying firewood on their backs that is bundled and strapped to their foreheads. All the while they have beautiful color wraps and dresses on and a number of small kids following along dressed equally as well. I decided to pullover in advance of one of these groups and prep my camera to sneak a shot of them, (I do mean “sneak”, it’s rude/mean/or a curse to take their picture). Bad idea. We’re X miles from anywhere and even further from a phone and our little rented ATOS (cheap Hundai product) won’t start. It won’t even click. (Read the following with a “Scottie” accent) “Captain, I’m givin’ her all I’ve got. We’ve got no power!” Thankfully we didn’t freak out too much; at least not externally. Our Mexican rental had a poorly connected battery cable. I decided this was a sign and decided to venture further into the cloud and dispense with the clandestine videography.

So, we found San Cristobal at the bottom of the mountain. It’s cool hear, as in temperature cool and as in pace of life cool.Lots of Bohemian types. The hostel that we are staying at is cheap and owned by a Canadian. Yes, that’s hostel not hotel. We never tried on so what the heck. It’s got wireless internet so here I am, writing this and life is good.

Hasta manana
