Howdy folks and I hope your first attempt at the New Year has proved successful. Whatever that means.

Sharon and I left for Mexico City at WAY too early of an hour. And this was after a short rest from a 14 hour drive from Tennessee. Not complaining, just a bit“stiff”.

We pre-booked a bed and breakfast that was near Chapultepec Park, The Zocalo and La Zona Rosa. It’s New Years Eve in Mexico City and we were ready to greet the new year! Set the dials for the heart of the sun and…

Problem is, well, the bed and breakfast. We found it fairly easy after a couple of subway rides. Not much to look at from the outside but we’re pretty used to that. We were greeted by a delightfully charming and friendly hombre. He showed us maps. He knew all the “artsy” things to do. He took our breakfast order.  Then he showed us a slab of concrete that he referred to as “your bed”.

We took a walk to the Zocalo and eventually found the “malecon” (walking streets). Soon, beer and very tender carne were within our grasps. We subway’d back to the B&B to take a nap that was never realized. The sound of Volkswagens were more like Comanches encircling us for the big kill. That, along with the concrete slab made us come to the decision to write a respectful note with an attached $20 and seek a new hotel.

In retrospect, the Ramada at the airport is pretty darn nice. Sharon and I don’t do “chain” hotels but… that’s a pretty nice bed and about $3 more per day. Plus, we know the subway routes and a station is just outside the main entrance. The guilt of leaving the B&B passed quickly.  So did greeting the New Year. We got close. Our intentions were admirable.

So here’s the New Year. We started with migas verdes, a “splat” of frijoles and good ol’ Mexican coffee. We went to the ever-so-convenient subway station, which resulted in a long walk through Chapultapec Park. Eventually we ended up at the National Anthropological Museum. Now that’s a cool museum. Everything you ever wanted to know about how Mexicans got to… is there for your interpretation. Seriously. Cool place.

So I’ve pretty much skipped over all the walking. In the last 24 hours that we’ve been in Mexico, we figure we’ve walked at least 16 miles. I see a hot tub in our not-to-distant future. Like, right after I finish this day’s episode.

It looks like we’ll visit Xochilmilco tomorrow, gardens that float in rivers of tequila, (my interpretation).

Till then… Happy New Year and all our love to you and your families.
