June 14 – 17 – These next few days in Playa were basically spent sleeping late, swimming at the pool and, of course, watching the Spurs humiliate the Heat on Fathers Day. On the 17th we walked the strip and listened to the street fill with cheers as Mexico took on Brazil in the World Cup. Everyone was having a good time so we joined in at a second story bar. Va Mexico Va! All the better with beers, chips and a Super Size order of Guacamole. The spine tingling zero to zero tie left Sharon and I in uninformed bewilderment. Back to the pool then a quick nap before dinner. Our last dinner in Playa del Carmen: Sharon – Chicken and mole, Donnie – Pesca entero.
The next morning, we set the controls for the heart of the sun. Destination: Home.
Feel free to examine this path on Google Earth.
June 18: Playa Del Carmen, north to Cancun, East to Merida, South through Campeche, the island city of Ciudad Del Carmen, through Frontera then South to stay the night on the other side of Villahermosa (which is neither a villa, nor is it hermosa).
June 19: Villahermosa through Coatzacoalcos, start heading northwest up the other side of the gulf, up through Veracruz, then about 60 miles of bad back road to stop in Tampico.
Today, June 20: Tampico chug-hole-tap-dance for about 20 miles, then past Victoria, a stressful but successful pass trough Monterrey and now we’re about 15 minutes outside of Nuevo Laredo. Though there is plenty of daylight left, we’re going to simply stay the night, go to one of our favorite restaurants and then go to bed early. We’ll try our luck and hit the International Bridge at about Super Early 30.
Later my friends.
